The eight principles that guide our work

S - Safety

Safety comes before strategy. Emotional, relational, and physical safety are the foundations for everything else. If a child or adult does not feel safe, nothing meaningful can grow.

T - Trust

Trust is built slowly and repaired often. We earn it through consistency, honesty, and care—not control. Strong relationships hold the work together.

A - Attunement

We notice what is beneath the behaviour. Attunement means staying curious, listening carefully, and responding to need, not just reaction.

R - Regulation

Regulation before reasoning. Calm bodies and calm environments create the conditions for learning, reflection, and repair.

F - Flexibility

We flex the system, not the child. Support adapts to need. One-size-fits-all approaches do not build belonging.

I - Inclusion

Inclusion is something we do, not something we say. Belonging is active, relational, and intentional. Everyone matters here.

S - Support

Support is for everyone. Children, families, and staff all need steady, compassionate support to thrive. No one does this alone.

H - Humanity

Human first, always. Before policy. Before performance. Before data. We lead and learn with empathy, dignity, and care.

How we build safe, trusting relationships

PACE is a trauma-informed approach that helps adults respond to behaviour with connection and understanding. When a young person is distressed, we restore emotional safety before expecting reflection or learning.

Playfulness

Using warmth, appropriate humour and shared enjoyment to reduce anxiety and help a young person feel safe enough to engage.

Acceptance

Showing unconditional regard for the young person while separating who they are from the behaviour they may be displaying.

Curiosity

Replacing judgement with a genuine desire to understand what may be driving distress or behaviour.

Empathy

Helping the young person feel understood and supported, so they know they are not alone in their emotional experience.

One starfish at a time

To us, The Starfish Way means noticing the individual in front of us and responding with care, even when the tide feels strong. It means choosing connection over correction, curiosity over judgement and community over isolation.

Meaningful change grows through collective effort and small, consistent acts of care. When people work together with intention, those ripples of connection begin to reshape the shoreline for everyone—one starfish at a time.
